The expected. Like every year I’m not surprised by what was announced and shown at the conference. Just a little disclaimer, this post is not a complete list of what they showed, but more of a commentary on what I thought about the games they displayed.
EA started with one of their biggest sellers, Battlefield. In this case, the recently announced BFV, which sparked controversy over some historical inaccuracy. I think people complaining about that are out of their minds. The people presenting the game also explained it very well, addressing in some form or another the controversies. They said that BFV is “their take on the war”, their “portrayal”. Moving on, they talked about the game having better destruction mechanics, like breaking through windows. Siege weapons will also be movable now through the battlefield and you will be able to customize your soldier. About the single player, they said they were looking into the “untold stories” of “the man and women who shaped the world”. If they do it like the story in Battlefield 1 it is going to be great. They also said that there will be no loot boxes or premium pass, at least that after all their mistakes with Battlefront II.
The franchise people somehow keep buying every year. And, like always, they will only improve some mechanics and aspects of the game, not actually changing anything big enough to be worth the money. They also announced a free trial for FIFA 18 that will be happening until the release of FIFA 19, so people can play the new World Cup mode.
EA also presented some new features for different platforms as well as Origin Access Premier. The latter will include big games like BFV, FIFA 19 and Anthem. Let’s see how this will work. For now, I have no formed opinion about it.
Before starting this game’s presentation, they hinted at a new Star Wars game called Jedi Fallen Order, which will be set during Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. They didn’t show us any footage, so there’s not much to go about speculating.
Then, they went on to Battlefront. After the fiasco on their release, they seem to be trying to make up for it. They announced some free updates with new content and also the introduction of General Grievous, Obi-Wan, Anakin and Count Dooku. But to be honest, I wasn’t paying much attention to them at this point.
They showed us some live gameplay, but besides that, I don’t have much to say besides the fact that is being released today and I’m not going to buy it.
Sea of Solitude
A new game from a German developer team, that I didn’t catch the name of. It is a game about solitude and loneliness. They said that all humans can relate to being lonely and that “it is not a made-up story even though it takes place in a made-up world”. They also said that players searching for fun gameplay and for a deeper meaning will both enjoy it. To be honest, I’m not a big fan. I don’t like these games that try focusing on the meaning behind. It hurts the enjoyment a bit. But that’s me, there are many who like it.
Command & Conquer: Rivals
In the mobile market, EA announced their new game that is coming out today. It is a sort of duel between two players that have to build some machines to fight each other for the domain of the nuclear bombs on the center. Seems alright.
Now, to the big game of the day. Anthem was, for me, a disappointment. At least for now. I was expecting much more, like live gameplay. Instead, we got some cut-out gameplay of the best parts with some freezes, which can only indicate future problems. They revealed very little about it as well and I was left not actually wanting more. It is a game that I’m certain many people will buy before it is even released, but after my many experiences with EA, I do not judge their products until the day they arrive to the public.
